Format and technical requirements

LinkedIn recommends 400×400 pixels, but accepts up to 8 MB. Square, high-resolution, without filter. The photo is displayed very small on mobile - strong contrast and a clear face count more than detail.

Facial expressions and image composition

Take a look directly into the camera with a friendly, open facial expression. No forced smile. The head may be turned slightly, the shoulders should not be centered frontally - this looks too formal.

About 60-70% Face in the picture - not too close, not too far. Eyes on the upper third line. Hands are rarely visible in the LinkedIn photo.

Background: Simple, bright and suitable

Optimal are simple, calm backgroundswhite wall, office window, park, stairwell with depth. Avoid full shelves, door frames right behind the head or blurred logos.

Outdoor shots with soft daylight are a very good option - natural, friendly, modern.

Outfit for the professional environment

Wear what you would wear at work. Business-Casual works in almost all sectors. Not a suit for creative professions, but also not a T-shirt for banking.

Common errors

Selfies, old vacation photos, group photos with cropped heads, visible reflections in glasses, poorly lit rooms. A professional headshot is a small investment with a big impact - it makes a difference for years - on every recruiter and customer screen.

Background image and banner - the underestimated lever

In addition to the profile photo, on LinkedIn you have a Banner image (1584 × 396 px). This is often filled with standard cover images or stock photos - and you are giving away an entire advertising space.

Useful are: a Photo of your working environment (workshop, office, outdoor area), one Tidy desk holder with a coffee cup and notebook, a Team picture in full width. If you are brave, you can also Brand-compliant cover design with logo and slogan.

Tip: The LinkedIn banner is cropped differently on mobile than on desktop. Important content (logo, text) should be in the middle 1200 × 396 px.

Profile photo maintenance: How often to update?

A LinkedIn profile photo should be renewed every 2-3 years. Hairstyles change, beard lengths, glasses, skin tone. A photo that is 5 years old and shows you 5 years younger is irritating when you first meet someone.

When changing careers (new position, new employer, new industry), it is often worth having a new photo that matches the new role. If you are moving into a management position, you can create a more serious image than was necessary for a junior job.

LinkedIn images for entire teams

If your company wants a uniform LinkedIn presence, it's worth having a Team shoot with a common visual language. Same or similar background (e.g. studio gray or window with light), same pose family (straight into the camera, slightly turned), same outfit direction.

The result: when recruiters come looking, they see a professional, cohesive brand. I typically run such projects as half-day or day shoots for 5-20 people.
