The traditional asparagus dinner of the Römerberg-Dudenhofen FDP community association is just such an occasion. Where once greats such as Hans-Dietrich Genscher or Christian Lindner were guests, today those who embody the liberal spirit and economic responsibility proudly join in. With top-class guests, pointed speeches and a clear commitment to the center of society, the 46th Asparagus Dinner sent a strong signal - for economic reason, entrepreneurial thinking and European responsibility.

Prominence and pragmatism

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Member of the European Parliament and Chairwoman of the Defense Committee, Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Economic Affairs Daniela Schmitt and Dr. Katja Scharpwinkel from the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE gathered in Römerberg with political and economic expertise. The exchange between entrepreneurs, politicians and society was more than just a festive get-together - it was an expression of a fundamental liberal understanding: freedom needs responsibility, prosperity needs reliability, Progress needs courage.

BASF: Responsibility under pressure - and with foresight

Dr. Scharpwinkel impressively emphasized how profound the challenges currently facing Germany as an industrial location are: Energy prices, geopolitical upheavals and stagnating demand are even affecting global corporations such as BASF. But instead of lamenting, the motto in Ludwigshafen is: stay the course. With a clear strategy, regional production and the goal of becoming Europe's leading sustainable chemical site, BASF is showing how transformation can succeed - if the political framework conditions play along.

Her appeal: "Now we need more than just signals from Brussels and Berlin - we need action. Companies need planning security, reliable energy prices and the political courage to prioritize economic strength." A demand that not only the local entrepreneurs were able to endorse, but which the FDP, with its economic expertise, has long since made its central guiding principle.

Liberal signature: Responsibility for freedom and progress

In her speech, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann reminded the audience of Europe's obligation to defend freedom and prosperity - not with fear-mongering, but with attitude. "What Europe needs now are clever minds and not fear of fear." Her words struck a chord with an audience that is not longing for simple slogans, but for solution-oriented policies.

FDP state chairwoman Daniela Schmitt also emphasized: "We need an economic environment that enables innovation instead of blocking it. Rhineland-Palatinate must remain an industrial state - climate-friendly, modern and open to new ideas." The fact that these ideas are further developed in close cooperation with companies such as heating technology pioneer KÜBLER from Ludwigshafen also makes the asparagus dinner a marketplace for shaping the future.

A meeting place that has meaning

The fact that this meeting is possible is thanks to the tireless commitment of the FDP community association - led by Justus Rabe and honorary chairman Jürgen Creutzmann. It was the latter who launched the asparagus dinner in 1978 and whose liberal signature can still be felt today. Special thanks also went to the Liedertafel Dudenhofen, who laid the foundations for the success of the day with their musical charm and organizational commitment.

Conclusion: No ceremony like any other

The FDP Römerberg-Dudenhofen asparagus dinner is more than just a place for culinary enjoyment. It is a place of liberal self-assurance. A place where smart politics meets economic expertise. And a place where it becomes clear: If you want to shape the future, you have to think freedom economically, live responsibility politically - and understand society as a community.

Or, as one speaker charmingly summarized it: "Here you don't just get asparagus with hollandaise sauce - here you also get content with substance."

As a professional photographer with a focus on reportage and event documentation, I was commissioned by the Römerberg-Dudenhofen FDP community association in May 2025 to photograph a special political event: the traditional asparagus dinner, at which MEP and defense politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann was a guest this year.

Authentic images of political encounters

Strack-Zimmermann spoke openly about the current situation of the FDP after missing out on a seat in the Bundestag in front of around 70 guests in the Liedertafel singing club in Dudenhofen. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of defence readiness, European cooperation and a defensive democracy - topics that she represents like no other as the former Chair of the Defence Committee in the Bundestag and current MEP.

In addition to Strack-Zimmermann, numerous personalities from politics and business were present, including Minister of Economic Affairs Daniela Schmitt, Minister of Justice Philipp Fernis and Katja Scharpwinkel from BASF. The event was characterized by an open exchange and a lively atmosphere - ideal conditions for a meaningful photo reportage.
